We are a small, in-home cattery located just outside of Nelson, British Columbia, Canada. We live with our cats and other animals on an 18 acre hobby farm near Kootenay Lake. Our cats are part of our family and raised in a clean, loving environment with plenty of socialization and daily interaction.

We do not give tours for several reasons. 1. Privacy: This is our private home and property. We are not a petting zoo. 2. Safety: The health of our cats is our #1 priority. People can bring in bactiera and virus on their shoes and clothing. 3. Time: The majority of our time is spent with the cats, as well as attending to other farm chores, work and family life. Exception: If you have reserved a kitten, you may come pick up the kitten at our location at the pre-planned go-home date. At this time, we are happy to show you where the cats live. ​***We are happy to give video tours and do video chats with prospective kitten owners.

We are a small, home-based cattery, so we do not always have kittens available. We plan our litters carefully around the health and well-being of our queens rather than trying to have kittens available year-round.As of August 2026, we are nearing the end of our kitten season, with two more litters planned before the end of the year.For 2027, we are currently planning approximately six litters total — one from each of our breeding queens. Litter sizes can vary considerably, so the number of kittens we have each year is never guaranteed.Because we keep our breeding program intentionally small, families hoping for a Maine Coon Mayo kitten are encouraged to join our Priority List, which is capped at just 20 families at a time.

Kittens "go-home" date is at the 12 weeks mark. By 12 weeks of age, we ensure kittens have been seen twice by a vet, received 2 sets of shots, microchip, and multiple dewormings. They will be using the litter box and eating solid food. The mama cat will be able to gradually wean from nursing, as well as teach the kittens how to hunt and groom themselves.  Keeping the kittens this long also allows us to monitor their personality and place them with appropriate families.  It just allows for an overall more confident and self-adjusted kitten.

At this time, we do not deliver kittens. Kittens are picked up at our home, or we can meet you at one of the local airports.

We actually have 2 lists:General List - this is my list of approved applicants who are interested in future kittens, but have not placed a deposit yet. Priority List - This is my deposit list, and kittens are always offered to families on this list first. Once everyone on the Priority List has chosen, any remaining kittens become available to those on the General list. Joining the Priority List is the best way to guarantee a kitten within a year (often sooner) of your preferred colour, patten and sex. ​Click here for our non-obligatory Kitten Application!

We feed a whole prey raw diet by a Canadian company called Back2Raw. We are big advocates of a whole prey, moisture-rich raw diet, and offer support to our clients. In addition to raw, we also feed various flavours of Nulo wet and dry kibble. All kittens are weaned onto a variety of raw, wet and kibble. This allows our kitten owners to choose what type of diet fits into their lifestyle, and the kitten will be easily transitioned into your life.  ​ Some brands we recommend: Raw: back2raw, Carnivora, Smack! Wet: Nulo, Tiki Cat, Weruva, Perfrmatin Ultra, Orijen, Wellness Dry: Nulo, Orijen ​ We do not recommend feeding only kibble without some moisture rich food. Kibble contains very little moisture, only 6-10%, and cats have a very low thirst drive leading to chronic dehydration. Maine Coons are  known for their friendly nature and large size, but like all pedigreed animals, they can be predisposed to certain health conditions. Regular health testing is important to ensure that they remain healthy. As a responsible Maine Coon breeder, we prioritize health testing on our breeding cats to minimize the risk of inherited conditions. Please read further to learn about the testing we do:  ​1. DNA testing: our breeding cats are  tested and cleared through Wisdom Panel for over 50 different genetic health conditions.​1. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): This is a common heart condition in Maine Coons. Our cats have all tested negative through DNA testing for this disease. We plan to offer ECHOs this Spring through a mobile sonographer. 2. Hip Dysplasia: Maine Coons can be prone to hip dysplasia, which can lead to arthritis and pain. X-rays can be used to evaluate hip joint conformation. All our cats have thier hips x-rayed and sent to O.F.A. for grading before breeding. Only cats with a passing grade will be added to our bredding program. 3. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA): This genetic condition affects muscle control. Genetic testing can determine if a cat is a carrier or affected.  All our cats test negative for SMA. 4. Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD): While not as common in Maine Coons as in some other breeds, testing can be done to rule out this condition. All our cats are negative for PKD. 5. Dental Health: Regular dental check-ups are important, as Maine Coons can be prone to dental issues. Our cat's teeth are cleaned annually at our vet, as needed. 6. Regular Veterinary Check-ups: Annual health check-ups can help catch any potential health issues early. Our cats are under the care of our veterinarian, and are all up to date on their vaccines and are all negative for FIV/FeLV. 7. Parasite Control: Keeping up with vaccinations and preventive medications for parasites is essential for overall health. Our cats and kittens are dewormed on a schedule. 8. Weight Management: Regular weight checks can help prevent obesity-related health problems. All our cats are fed a complete raw diet, have room to play and  run, have access to a "catio" with fresh air, and are in optimal condition. It's recommended to work with a veterinarian who is familiar with the Maine Coon breed to establish a comprehensive health testing and maintenance plan.

We use a company called SpaySecure to protect your kitten’s health. SpaySecure uses binding contracts to ensure cat sterilization at a healthy age. They’ll follow up with you to provide advice and reminders, ensuring your kitten’s sterilization. The cost of the SpaySecure program is included in the kitten price. The cost of the actual spay/neuter surgery is the responsibility of the buyer.  All of our kittens must be altered by 6 months of age.

We produce Maine Coons in a wide variety of colours and patterns, depending on the pairing. Our program includes black, blue, red, cream, silver and brown/black, as well as torties and torbies.Kittens may be solid, smoke, tabby or silver tabby, with tabby patterns including classic, mackerel, spotted and ticked. Many of our kittens may also have white markings, ranging from small amounts of white to more noticeable bicolour patterns.We also work with polydactyl Maine Coons and are developing our Phoenix and dominant blue eye (DBE) lines, which will bring some particularly unique possibilities to future litters.Colours and patterns vary with each pairing, and we cannot guarantee that a particular colour, pattern, sex or trait will be produced in any litter.

DBE stands for Dominant Blue Eyes. It is a genetic trait that can produce blue or partially blue (odd) eyes in Maine Coons that would not normally have blue eyes based on their coat colour.Unlike the blue eyes associated with white cats, DBE is inherited as a dominant trait and can occur in cats with many different coat colours and patterns. Depending on the individual cat, DBE may produce two blue eyes, one blue eye and one traditionally coloured eye, or variations in the amount and intensity of blue.DBE is still relatively uncommon in Maine Coons and is something we are introducing thoughtfully into our breeding program. Our goal is to produce beautiful blue-eyed Maine Coons while continuing to prioritize the health, temperament, structure and breed type that are most important to us.

A Phoenix Maine Coon is a Maine Coon with a newly identified and extremely rare colour trait that creates a distinctive warm reddish or mahogany appearance. Phoenix kittens can sometimes resemble traditional red kittens at birth, but the genetics behind their colour are different.Phoenix is still very new within the Maine Coon breed, and research into its genetics and expression is ongoing. As the kittens mature, the unique pigmentation becomes more apparent, creating the rich colouring that distinguishes Phoenix from traditional red.We are incredibly proud to be the first cattery in Western Canada to introduce the Phoenix colour into our breeding program. Being part of the early development of this exciting new colour is something we take very seriously, with health, temperament, structure and true Maine Coon type remaining at the forefront of our breeding decisions.

No, we do not show our cats, and showing is not something we plan to pursue.Cat shows can be a wonderful experience for breeders and owners who enjoy them, but they simply aren’t part of our vision for Maine Coon Mayo. We have our own preferences when it comes to the Maine Coon type, structure, expression, and overall look we want to produce. We intentionally breed toward a more pronounced “wild type” appearance while remaining within the established Maine Coon breed standard. We love strong features, substantial structure, impressive ear furnishings, and that unmistakable wild Maine Coon expression. Those preferences do not always align with the cats that are rewarded in the show ring, and we are comfortable breeding toward the qualities we value rather than seeking validation through titles or awards.Showing would also require significant travel from our location, considerable time away from home, and an environment that we feel could be unnecessarily stressful for some of our cats. We would much rather devote that time and energy to our cats at home, our breeding program, health testing, raising our kittens, and supporting our kitten families.That said, we have absolutely nothing against cat shows or those who participate in them. Showing is simply a personal choice. If one of our kitten families is passionate about showing their Maine Coon, we are happy to support and encourage them in pursuing something they enjoy.At Maine Coon Mayo, a ribbon or title does not determine the value of our cats. Our focus is on producing healthy, well-tempered, beautiful Maine Coons with the distinctive wild type we love, while respecting the established standard of the Maine Coon breed.
