How Much Does a Maine Coon Kitten Cost in Canada?
If you've started looking for a Maine Coon kitten in Canada, you've probably discovered that prices can be all over the place.
One breeder may charge $2,500. Another may charge $3,500. Another may charge $4,500 or more.
So, how much should a Maine Coon kitten actually cost in Canada?
There isn't one correct answer.
Current advertised prices from Canadian Maine Coon breeders vary considerably. In British Columbia alone, I found breeders publicly advertising kittens at $2,500, $3,500 and $4,500 CAD, while other Canadian breeders advertise individual kittens at prices exceeding $5,000 CAD.
But price alone tells you surprisingly little about the quality of the kitten or the breeder.

Health testing, pedigree, temperament, veterinary care, how kittens are raised, the breeder's reputation, their health guarantee and their ongoing support all matter.
Think of it this way: asking “How much does a Maine Coon cost?” is a little like asking “How much does a car cost?”
Technically, there is an answer.
It just isn't one number.
Why Are Maine Coons So Expensive?
The simplest answer is demand.
Maine Coons are incredibly popular, and demand for well-bred kittens is high. Certain colours, patterns and traits may be especially sought after, which can increase their price even further.
But demand is only part of the story.
There are considerable expenses involved in operating a responsible breeding program that aren't necessarily obvious when someone sees a kitten advertised online.
The purchase of breeding cats themselves is only the beginning.
Depending on the program, breeders may also be paying for health testing, veterinary care, DNA testing, hip X-rays, blood testing, registration, import expenses, transportation, food, litter, equipment, cat trees, cleaning supplies, kitten supplies, websites, marketing and countless other expenses involved in raising cats and kittens.
And sometimes things go wrong.
That's part of breeding too.
The Costs Behind a Maine Coon Breeding Program
Quality imported breeding cats can cost several thousand dollars before transportation, import expenses, health testing and veterinary care are even considered.
Many of our breeding cats come from Europe. Rather than having them shipped as cargo, we typically arrange for them to travel accompanied by a flight nanny.
It is significantly more expensive, but I prefer having someone personally accompany the kitten during the journey. Moving internationally is already stressful enough for a young cat without adding unnecessary stress where we can avoid it.
Once that cat arrives in Canada, the investment isn't over.
Our prospective breeding cats undergo health screening that includes DNA testing, FIV and FeLV blood testing and OFA hip evaluations, among other testing when indicated.

And here is something many pet families probably never think about:
Buying a prospective breeding cat doesn't mean that cat will ultimately be suitable for breeding.
Breeding cats typically don't come with the same type of health guarantee that pet families may receive.
A breeder can spend thousands purchasing a promising kitten, importing that kitten, raising them and completing health testing, only to discover months later that the cat isn't suitable for their breeding program.
I've had this happen more than once.
When it does, the cat is placed in a loving pet home and we accept the financial loss.
It's never particularly fun to swallow, but it's part of breeding responsibly. If a cat doesn't meet the standards we've established for our breeding program, the amount of money already invested shouldn't change that decision.
Veterinary expenses can also be incredibly unpredictable.
In 2025, we had several unexpected medical emergencies with our cats. By the end of the year, our veterinary expenses alone were approaching $18,000.
That certainly wasn't in the budget!
None of this means that a breeder with higher expenses automatically produces better kittens. It simply provides some perspective on what may be happening behind the scenes before a kitten is ever offered to a family.
Does a More Expensive Maine Coon Mean a Better Maine Coon?
Not necessarily.
This is probably one of the most important things I want prospective families to understand.
Price is not a reliable indicator of quality.
A $4,500 kitten isn't automatically better bred than a $2,500 kitten simply because it costs more.
Likewise, I wouldn't choose a breeder simply because their kittens are less expensive.
If I were purchasing a Maine Coon as a pet, I would personally be willing to pay more for a kitten from pedigreed, appropriately health-tested lines with a strong health guarantee and a breeder whose practices I felt comfortable with.
I'd want to know how the parents were selected.
I'd want to see their health testing.
I'd want to know how the kittens were raised.
I'd want a written contract and health guarantee.
And I'd want to know that the breeder would still answer my messages after my kitten came home.
Look at the breeding program behind the price, not just the number attached to the kitten.
Flat Pricing vs. Variable Pricing
This is another area where breeders do things very differently.
Some Maine Coon breeders charge one flat price for every pet kitten regardless of colour, sex or individual features.
Other breeders use variable pricing.
Neither pricing model inherently tells you whether someone is a good breeder.
At Maine Coon Mayo, we use variable pricing.
Our standard solid and tabby pet kittens currently begin at $2,800 CAD. Silver and smoke kittens are an additional $500, and polydactyl kittens are an additional $500.
We do not charge differently based on sex.
Why variable pricing?
There is particularly high demand for smoke Maine Coons and polydactyl Maine Coons, and our pricing reflects that demand.
At the same time, I think the more classic Maine Coon colours are every bit as beautiful. I want to continue being able to offer those kittens at a more accessible price rather than increasing the price of every kitten simply because some traits are particularly sought after.
It's simply the pricing model that works for our program.
And if there's one topic guaranteed to get breeders talking, it's what other breeders charge!
Over the years, I've been told my prices are too high, too low, that I shouldn't have different prices for different kittens and probably everything in between.
My philosophy is pretty simple.
Every breeder gets to decide what makes sense for their own program.
I don't know another breeder's expenses, investment, demand or business model, and they don't know mine. I generally prefer to mind my own business and let other breeders run theirs.
There are plenty of cats to go around. 😉
How Your Kitten Is Raised Has Value Too
This is something I think gets overlooked when people compare Maine Coon prices.
Not every kitten has the same first 12 weeks of life.
There can be a significant difference between kittens raised in a home environment with regular human interaction and kittens raised primarily in cages, kennels or separate breeding facilities with limited handling.
At Maine Coon Mayo, our kittens are raised in our home as part of our everyday lives.
They are handled from birth, exposed to normal household activity and given opportunities to play, explore and interact with people and other cats as they develop.
That takes time.
It also takes space, equipment, cleaning, enrichment and a tremendous amount of hands-on involvement.
For us, it's worth it.
Temperament is one of our biggest priorities in our breeding program, and socialization doesn't begin the week before a kitten goes home.
It begins from birth.
When comparing kittens from different breeders, I think it's completely reasonable to consider not only health testing and pedigree but also what your kitten's first few months of life actually look like.
What's Included in the Price of a Maine Coon Kitten?
This is another reason comparing two advertised prices isn't always straightforward.
One breeder may include services or veterinary care that another breeder doesn't.
At Maine Coon Mayo, our kittens go home with veterinary wellness care, age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, registration, a written contract, our four-year health guarantee, SpaySecure, one month of complimentary pet insurance, a go-home package and ongoing breeder support.
Other breeders may include different things.
For example, some breeders spay or neuter their kittens before they leave for their new homes. That veterinary procedure costs money, and it may be reflected in the kitten's purchase price.
At Maine Coon Mayo, we take a different approach.
Our pet kittens go home under a spay and neuter contract using SpaySecure. We prefer to give families the option of waiting until their kitten is approximately six months old before having the procedure performed while still ensuring that our pet kittens are spayed or neutered according to their contract.
Neither approach can be understood simply by looking at the advertised kitten price.
When you're comparing breeders, ask: "What exactly is included in that price?"
What About Deposits and Waitlists?
Deposits are another area where breeder policies vary considerably.
At Maine Coon Mayo, families join our Priority List with a $1,000 deposit, which is applied toward the eventual purchase price of their kitten.
This system has worked extremely well for us.
It allows us to know that our future kittens have committed homes, often before they're even born. It also gives our families the reassurance of knowing that they are guaranteed the opportunity to choose a kitten within 6 to 24 months, according to the terms of our Priority List agreement, or their deposit is returned.
Before placing a deposit with any breeder, make sure you understand exactly what you're agreeing to.
Read the contract.
Know whether the deposit is refundable or non-refundable, whether it goes toward the purchase price, what happens if the breeder doesn't produce the kitten you've been waiting for and how kitten selection works.
And please don't send a deposit just because someone on Facebook tells you that six other people are interested in the kitten and you need to send money in the next ten minutes.
That's when I would put my credit card back in my wallet.
How Cheap Is Too Cheap for a Maine Coon?
This is where price can become useful information.
A low price doesn't automatically mean something is wrong. There are established Canadian breeders advertising Maine Coon kittens around the $2,000–$2,500 range, so there is no legitimate universal minimum price for the breed.
But unusually cheap “purebred Maine Coons” are also commonly used to attract buyers, and price should be considered alongside all the other information you can verify about the breeder.
Personally, if I saw someone advertising a supposedly pedigreed Maine Coon kitten in British Columbia for significantly under $2,500, I would investigate very carefully.
That doesn't mean I can declare from the price alone that it's a scam.
It means I'd start asking questions.
Is the breeder registered?
Can I verify their identity and cattery?
Can I see the parents?
Can I see the health-testing results?
Does the kitten have registration papers?
Is there a contract?
Can the breeder show me the kitten live on a video call?
Does their online presence have an established history?
If the answers start getting strange, I'd walk away.

So, How Much Should You Spend on a Maine Coon?
There isn't a magic number.
Current Canadian breeder listings show just how broad the market is, with publicly advertised pet prices ranging from around $2,000 at the lower end to $5,000 and beyond for some kittens. What is included also varies substantially between programs.
Rather than deciding that a certain price automatically means a breeder is good or bad, look deeper.
Consider the kitten's pedigree and registration.
Look at the parents' health testing.
Ask about the health guarantee.
Find out how the kittens are raised and socialized.
Understand what veterinary care is included.
Read the contract.
Research the breeder's reputation.
Ask what happens if you need support after your kitten comes home.
And choose a breeder whose practices and priorities align with what you're looking for.
Maine Coons are in high demand, and particularly sought-after colours, patterns and traits will often cost more.
But the most expensive Maine Coon isn't automatically the best one, and the least expensive isn't automatically a bargain.
Look at the breeding program behind the price.
